A five year photographic timeline documenting a Detroit DIY skatepark that changed the community for good.
"The Wig" was a DIY skateboard park located in Midtown Detroit on the repurposed tennis courts of the former "Wiggle Recreation Center". Derrick Dykas approached the City of Detroit with a crude sketch of a skatepark and the city allowed a newly formed group called Community Push to begin building in August of 2014. Detroit was changing rapidly and the permanent use of this land was never guaranteed. The city made it clear that it was a prime spot for development and therefore, always under threat of demolition. The first rumors of demolition came a little under a year after we broke ground. It endured a five year ride.
In many ways, it put Detroit Skateboarding on the map. It gave us a place to hold events, hang out, grow and skate. It formed an enduring community that is still very close to this day. This book documents the life and culture of The Wig as seen through the lens of Evan Hutchings.
